Masoala - the Eye of the Forest

The history of the evolution of Madagascar is ancient. Isolated from Africa and Asia, the flora and fauna of Madagascar developed independently. The different climates, topography, and geology led to the development of a highly diverse flora and fauna in Madagascar, with a high endemic share; In other words, numerous species of animals and plants can only be found in Madagascar and no where else in the world.

This rich biodiversity is the most pronounced in the rainforest. The Masoala peninsula is covered by the last large rainforest surface of Madagascar. It is mountainous in the center and densely forested. Steep inclinations blend into multifaceted coastal forest areas with mangrove forests, sandy coasts, and bizarre rock formations. Huge coral riffs stretch out in front of the coast.

In the bay in front of the peninsula, dolphins accompany fishing boats out to sea and in July, humpback whales come here to give birth to their young. The island Nosy Mangabe lies in the inner bay and is popular with tourists. Since 1966, this island - formerly home to seafarers as well as being a slave island - has been a special reservation for a Madagascan lemur species known as the Aye-Aye.
