The area surrounding the Masoala Rainforest on Madagascar is one of the regions with the largest variety of species in the world. Approx. 80% of all the animal and plant species on the island are endemic, that is to say, they only exist here and nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, the pressure of the population on this sensitive ecosystem is very high. Slash-and-burn to create new land for cultivation is the order of the day, as is the destruction of large surfaces of untouched nature.

Although the majority of the surface of the Masoala peninsula has been under the Nature Conservation Act since 1997, the year that marked the foundation of the Masoala National Park, conflicts between the Park Administration and the local population continue to arise. Poaching as well as slash-and-burn regularly take place within the Park boundaries. One of the main reasons for these occurrences being that the Park boundaries are only insufficiently marked.

To date, the Friends of Masoala have been able to raise CHF 10,000.- to be made available for the marking of the 500-km long Masoala boundaries. . Read more about it.
